my love

my love
how your tokens
and signs of affection
frighten me
how can i be to you
what you think me to be

you know am to many a wind,
whose effect never is felt
and i think myself
unworthy of your love
the offer of it
and your sweet words and looks
touch both my heart and soul

you have flattered me
with such wondrous gifts
allow me to send you
this token in return
though nothing it may seem
but it is what my heart could afford
‘the portrait of my heart’
and allow me to remain
in all things
a love never consummated.
